How are YOU?

Dear parents of children and adults on the autism spectrum, how are you? I feel like my blog has been focused on my son and autism, in general, which hasn’t left much room for our thoughts and experiences, as parents. I feel grateful for every “How is Oliver doing?” that I get, but after noticing the absence of the “How are you?”, I wanted to ask it of all of you, from the bottom of my heart. I want you to feel heard, supported, and related to.

  1. I understand what you are feeling. In fact, I have written twice about this very thing on my Blog (“Twenty Minutes” and “It’s About Who?”) because it is so important as Autism Parents for our self care to know someone is concerned about US! My Mom , the mother of six children(who would have been 88 today) always said, there is a a reason they tell you to put your oxygen mask on first when you fly…..if you aren’t taken care of, you can’t take care of your child. It seems counter-intuitive because we are all made to feel guilty if we have a thought not about Autism or do something for ourselves that doesn’t also help our child…..I touch-up my roots because I feel better about myself when I do and if I feel better about myself, it’s easier to be a better Autism Mom!

As to how I’m feeling today; Mom passed away in July, 2014 and since today is her birthday, I’m a bit weepy because I miss her so much!

    • I can’t imagine losing my mom, but to put myself in your shoes, I definitely understand why you’re “weepy”– so sorry for your loss. I loved and can relate to everything you said here. It’s so true. I’m going to go and read those posts; thanks for the titles! Thank you for sharing.
